About us

Our History

The establishment of BuildingSmart in 2005 is the next phase of development for construction industry process improvements through improved collaboration tools. These technologies have been developed by the IAI (International Alliance for Interoperability established in 1994 in the constrution industry) and the related STEP program (Standard for Exchange of Product data, started in the mid-80's in aviation, automotive, shipbuilding, and other industries) that has been ongoing for twenty years.

Our Goals

We want to produce much better buildings! Buildings that the community values, that meet real needs, that perform better, that impact the environment less, that take less time and money to build and to use. To meet all these goals, we need better processses, better collaboration, better tools. We are promoting technologies and processes that promise better across-the-board outcomes. BuildingSmart drives industry uptake of these technologies, providing promotion, implementation, and training programs, as distinct from the technical standards development work of the IAI.

Our Members

The construction industry is one of the largest industries in Australia. We draw our members from across the industry, including building owners and developers (both government and private); Architects, Engineers, and related design, planning, and authority professionals; builders, sub-contractors, product and materials suppliers; and related service providers.
