buildingSMART Australasia has recently collaborated with SIBA – The Spatial Industry Business Association – to prepare a Position Paper for the Commonwealth Department of Communication. The key focus of this Position Paper titled “Integration of Geospatial and Built Environment National Data Policy” is on a data policy for the integration of spatial and construction information modelling technologies.
This Position Paper has been presented to ANZLIC and soon, the Australian Government, in support for our argument in favour of a National Data Policy that incorporates framework datasets for the Digital Built Environment. The intention is to lay the groundwork for digital prototyping of the built environment at a scale that encompasses buildings, civil infrastructure and urban space into one model, with links to urban contextual data using existing spatial technologies. The ideals reflected in this document are in line with international initiatives and, if supported by Government, could position the Australian construction industry at the forefront of developments!
The scope of the spatial industry embraces both the built environment and the natural environment, so BIM is of significant interest to SIBA members. Similarly, the scope of the construction industry benefits from technology but is only just starting to understand the implications of not working in a standardised manner with location based data.
