Currently under construction, the new Royal Adelaide Hospital is one of the largest construction projects ever undertaken in South Australia. Driving best practice through design, innovation and technology, the new Royal Adelaide Hospital will become a centre of excellence creating a benchmark in future healthcare delivery.

The joint venture Hansen Yuncken and Leighton Contractors (HYLC) has embraced a complex and fully integrated Building Information Modelling (BIM) execution strategy. Since project commencement in 2011, more than 50 sub contractors and consultants have adopted the strategy to manage, coordinate, analyse and store project data within the virtual environment of the federated model.

BIM has become a new philosophy to construction project management allowing all parties to embrace a cohesive approach to the required systems, standards, methods and protocols to help deliver a successful cost efficient project.

As an integrated tool, BIM has helped to improve co-operation across the supply chain and provide a more engaged collaborative environment to help deliver this technologically advanced facility. The level of integration and collaboration is outstanding with most organisations using BIM for the first time and investing in their own businesses to utilise this innovative approach to contracting.

As a new initiative within the South Australian construction industry, HYLC has implemented an approach to manage traditional design data in conjunction with a cutting edge and bespoke management system (SPOTNIC) that offers a single point of truth for all project construction data, and on site motion tablets allowing HYLC and subcontractors to consistently capture, manage, maintain and report all completion data out in the field.

Further, this integrated approach to BIM manages the Quality Control records and provides access via a central location with capacity for retrieval from the objects within the 3D model. A glimpse into SPOTNIC’s data files gives an indication of the sheer enormity of the management task – with the system storing more than 18,280 documents, 254,798 FFE objects, 675 models and more than 400,000 3D architectural objects alone.

Management of this magnitude of data utilising BIM is critical to effective delivery of a facility that is transforming Adelaide’s West End. With an expanding workforce and the hospital structure now more than50% complete, HYLC is entering a new phase of construction with the commencement of fit out including the installation of the Hospital’s services, partitions and glass façade.
