GSA - a mega property agency

The property arm of the US federal government – the General Services
Administration Public Building Service or GSA/PBS – will require all
new buildings to be built and maintained using IFC-compliant software,
starting in 2006.
GSA is the largest property agency of its kind anywhere. Its annual spend is $13 billion – almost the equivalent of three T5 projects each and every year.
The agency believes that new technology now affords the opportunity for quantum improvements in design quality if facilities are built virtually before they are built physically, with a reduction in cost overruns and claims. Information about object modelling with IFCs is being cascaded down the organization and the various geographic areas, with the aim of early implementation.
GSA’s decision to take action on the use of IFCs is a landmark in IFC implementation
GSA timetable for adoption of IFC software
From 2006, design information will have to be provided in an IFC format. By 2008 the requirement will start to have an effect on actual buildings. Around 2011, the use of IFCs will come more fully into operation.
